It almost felt like suddenly losing someone close to you. I had a burning feeling in my heart and a tightness in my chest that made it difficult to breathe. A second felt like an hour, and everything moved in slow motion. Yet, at the same time, it was over in a flash. When facing a threatening event, you sometimes have only a fraction of a second to decide how to react to that threat. I had missed out on making the right decision many times in the past. This time, repeating the same mistake cost me dearly.

From darkness to dream life

I never thought I could make such a big mistake. The warning signs were there, but the promise of becoming a crypto millionaire kept me blind. The loss pulled me into a dark place, awoke my deepest fears, and shattered my mental stability. But from that low point, I climbed back up.

This story begins with a pathetic girl on the bottom of her bed, buried under empty chocolate wrappers as she binge-watched Netflix series. I was surrounded by gray thoughts, unable to see all the secret talents hidden inside me. Weeks had gone by, and I had been like a robot, just trying to survive the days. Every weekday, I followed the same routine and tried to stay positive at both home and work, pretending that everything was OK when it wasn’t.

Like the seasons in nature, there are also seasons in human life. We need to experience different things to be able to feel the contrast between those phases. After healing from a horrible hurt, you appreciate it when something good happens in your life. Without evil, there is no good; without sorrow, there is no happiness; and without pain, there is no pleasure.

It didn’t feel possible that this scam could even happen to me — a lawyer and a risk manager making a common mistake and losing a massive amount of money. Though I did not know it then, a months-long nightmare awaited me around the corner. I don’t know how well I would have survived without actively developing myself during the past few years and without the strength I had gained from experiencing my boyfriend’s severe sickness.
