Why I Get Shivers Thinking about my Old 9–5 Work
Organization
Before I said goodbye to my lawyer’s career and the traditional corporate world, I worked in an international bank.
There were so many organizational changes during my three-year stay in that bank that I lost count. What a waste of resources. All changes were executed in a way that everyone was left with confusion, and it took months to get organized again before it was time for another change.
Management changed continuously, and everyone tried to bring their own insight into how things should be organized. However, what employees really would have needed was clarity and support for their work.
Working Methods
My 15 years of career in different office jobs made me master at multitasking. Or not. There is no such thing as efficient multitasking. The harsh truth comes out when you slice up your days into pieces. How many tasks did you try to accomplish, and how many did you finish?
In big organizations, the hassle is going on daily, emergencies, and ad hocs that need attention daily. So whatever you meant to complete that day rarely actualizes. I always wondered how an organization like where I was working could be profitable. Today, I understand why, because banks are best friends with money printers.
However, many organizations are struggling with profitability because of their inefficiency. Especially the word ‘meeting’ gives me shivers. In the corporate world, some people love meetings and long ones. At least they used to. So I started to avoid them, asking what my role was whenever I had an invitation.
It was frustrating to use my time inefficiently with things that I knew that was possible to solve in 5 minutes. However, people loved meeting because they loved talking and socializing. In addition, they avoided risks that sole decision-making would have included.
Being Stuck in Hours
Before the coronavirus, working hours were a nightmare for me. With my efficiency, I could do more in a couple of hours than many could accomplish in a month. However, you needed to be stuck at the office 9–5 because that’s what they paid you for.
Today, during my one hour morning walk, I was thinking about my past career. I used to be one of those people stressing about going to work then. But, now, I was free to spend my time wherever I wanted. This was the freedom that I had been looking for all this time.
Make sure that you have adequate payment for your time. Time is all that we have. Suppose you really love your work, not just a lunch break. In that case, you can talk with your managers and organize your schedule and working methods in a way that makes you more productive and gives peace and flexibility over your own life.
We only live here once; you don’t want to spend it as a slave to the system but on your own terms.
